Valentine’s Day: The Chance for Ultimate Self-Love
Valentine’s Day is a nice opportunity to share the love with those you care about. Primarily used in a romantic context, the day also extends to family and friends – some people even refer to it as “Galentine’s Day”, a notion that celebrates love amongst female friends.
But have you ever considered where the love we have for others comes from? The answer is from within ourselves. Many of us have the meaning of self-love confused, often we look for love externally in the hope we’ll feel loved inside, and in some ways, we will, but there is a reason it is called self-love, it can’t be found elsewhere. Here are some ways you can practise self-love this Valentine’s Day:
Make a list of the things you are grateful for with your body and health
Think about the things you like about your body and what it can do for you. Too often we only notice our flaws and forget how amazing our bodies are. Refer to this list whenever you need a boost of positivity.
Wear something that makes you feel amazing
Even if you haven’t got any plans, put on your favourite outfit and let yourself feel good.
Give compliments to yourself and others
Spread positivity by uplifting yourself and those around you. Kindness is contagious and scientifically proven to boost your mood.
Treat yourself to a thoughtful meal
If cooking for a partner on Valentine’s Day (or any other day of the year) is a way to show your love and affection for them, then ask yourself the question, why aren’t you putting that level of care or attention into cooking a meal for yourself? Treat yourself to something you enjoy eating and savour the moment, even if it is just for you.
Avoid comparing yourself
This is easier said than done but comparing yourself to others is a killer of self-love. Taking our greatest flaws and comparing them to someone else’s greatest success. Instead, write your own story. We’re all on different paths, with different backgrounds and understanding that is the first step in avoiding comparison. The only comparison you ever need to make is the comparison to your past self.
Write yourself a body-positive promise for the future
It is said that it takes 21 days to form a new habit, do not stop here. Take what you have learnt from this challenge and continue to set yourself body-positive challenges in the future and stick to the promise you make yourself today.
Takeaways
Life is full of ups and downs and self-love isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. So, start implementing some of the practices above and most of all, have compassion with yourself when you fall short. Know that your actions have a ripple effect on others, by caring for yourself, you can care for the world.
