You have ownership of your programme

You are responsible, or soon will be, for your peer-support programme and are seeking guidance on how to structure, manage and embed it successfully.

You're looking to improve or relaunch your network

You already run (or are planning) a peer-support network (Mental Health First Aid, Champions, Ambassadors), and want to ensure it’s setup for success and delivers high engagement.

You have more than 250+ employees

You work within an organisation or business with more than 250+ employees. The Supporter Method framework is designed for businesses above this threshold.

Why this framework was created

Mental Health First Aiders. Wellbeing Champions. Culture Ambassadors. Supporter networks go by many names, but too often they face the same challenges. They operate without a clear structure. Training is delivered as a one-off course. Those supporting others are left without support themselves. Impact is difficult to measure. And risk is rarely managed in a proactive way.

Today, that’s no longer sustainable. The HSE has highlighted that there is no evidence that Mental Health First Aid programmes improve the wider management of mental ill-health, prompting many organisations to rethink how these programmes are designed and managed.

The Supporter Method was created to address these gaps. It provides a clear, safety-first framework for managing peer-support networks so they are structured, proactive and measurable. Built in alignment with HSE and ISO 45003 principles, it enables you to shape your programme around your organisation’s risks, responsibilities and success metrics.

How to assess where you are, set the foundations, identify the right people, and structure your network for long-term success

For example, if anyone can volunteer to become a Champion or Supporter, this can often harm your culture and introduce risk. Without the right assessment and recruitment practices in place, you may recruit the wrong people, create mistrust, and end up with low engagement across the network. This is about mapping out your programme from the start, and considering all of the vital elements needed to build a functioning programme.

Build safety, proactivity and consistency across your network, stepping away from the ‘one-off’ training approach.

For skills to truly stick, learning must be built into the rhythm of work, not confined to a standalone 2-day course. When individuals attend training and are then left to navigate the role alone, they often feel unprepared, isolated and hesitant to proactively hold conversations. Through the framework, you’ll learn how to design learning around your network – making it practical, relevant and continuous. Because hoping people “turn up for the webinar” is never a strategy for building a safe, effective peer-support network.

Establish safe systems instead of relying on hope so you can proactively protect, guide and sustain your Supporters’ wellbeing and competence.

Those who hold mental health conversations play a crucial role in business. If people don’t feel safe, they aren’t going to be able to deliver results. Those holding conversations will; listen, hold space, and help colleagues and team members navigate difficult moments. But they are not therapists. And they’re not invincible. In our framework, we explore the need for a proactive, structured support system around your Supporters, so they can thrive in the role.

Drive full visibility, build trust, and ensure your Supporter network is fully engaged.

Without consistent communication, recognition, and visibility, individuals supporting others can become inactive. Once this happen, employees will quickly forget the network exists, and the programme slowly dwindles. That’s why engagement is not something you only focus on at launch, it’s a continual part of the programme you build and maintain. Through our framework, we’ll show you how to keep your Supporters motivated, visible and engaged with your employees.

Capture meaningful data, demonstrate impact and influence organisational decision-making.

Too often, these support networks struggle with no way of measuring their engagement or impact, which makes it hard to justify investment and guarantee safety in its conduct. Through our framework, we show why it is necessary to capture the right data so you can ensure safety, spot risks and most importantly turn information into insight you can act upon. This helps you guide decisions and strengthen your entire wellbeing and health and safety strategies.
